Jeff McCarthy

Soldier, then prosecutor, then insurance-defense trial attorney — and now a lawyer for the people those companies used to be defended against.

Jeff McCarthy has spent his entire career on one side of a fight or another. What makes him useful to injured people is that for years, he was on the wrong one.

Service first

Before law school, Jeff served honorably in the U.S. Army and the Texas Army National Guard as a Cavalry officer. He deployed with the 82nd Airborne Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Closer to home, he served during the Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita response — work that put him in front of Texans on the worst days of their lives long before he ever filed a lawsuit.

That background shapes how the firm runs. Cases get worked methodically. Clients get told the truth about what they are facing, even when the truth is inconvenient. Nobody gets left waiting for a callback.

Prosecutor

Jeff began his legal career as a pre-select candidate with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, prosecuting criminal cases. It is where he learned to try a case in front of a Harris County jury — how to pick one, how to talk to one, and how quickly a jury senses when a witness is shading the truth.

The other side of the table

He then moved to civil work as a trial attorney for a Fortune 100 insurance carrier, and later with one of the top insurance-defense firms in Texas. For years, his job was to evaluate injury claims for the insurance company and defend them in court.

He learned the machinery from the inside: how reserves get set on a file, which medical records an adjuster combs through looking for a prior complaint of back pain, how a gap in treatment gets used against a claimant, what triggers a carrier to escalate a file to outside counsel, and what a carrier is actually afraid of when a case is set for trial.

Why this matters to your case

When an adjuster tells you an offer is “the most the policy will justify,” most people have no way to test that. Jeff spent years being the person who wrote sentences like that. He knows which ones are real and which ones are a negotiating position.

Leveling the playing field

Jeff founded McCarthy & Associates to use that experience for the other side. The firm represents people who have been hurt by someone else’s negligence — in vehicle collisions, on unsafe property, at work, and in catastrophic-injury and wrongful-death cases — along with policyholders whose own insurers have denied, delayed or underpaid a legitimate claim.

The firm takes these cases on a contingency fee and advances the case expenses. If there is no recovery, clients owe nothing — no attorney’s fees and no expenses.

A case is not one lawyer

Trial attorneys build the case. Paralegals and case managers keep it moving and keep you informed — which, for most clients, is the part that actually matters day to day.
